Goaltender Malcolm Subban showed the Boston Bruins why the team took him in the first round of the 2012 National Hockey League Draft.
Vegas Golden Knights goalie Malcolm Subban almost shut out the Boston Bruins, his former team.
Unfortunately for Boston, Malcolm showed them as a member of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, stopping 21 shots in a 3-1 win over the Bruins in Las Vegas Sunday night.
Malcolm’s first NHL win came more than a week after the Bruins placed the 23-year-old on waivers in an effort to send him to Boston’s American Hockey League farm team in Providence, Rhode Island.
But the Golden Knights grabbed him off the waiver wire. The move that paid dividends Sunday night as Malcolm filled in for injured goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who suffered a concussion in Vegas’ 6-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night.
Malcolm was blanking the Bruins until right wing David Pastrnak scored with 30 seconds left in the game.
“It’s a great feeling,” Subban told reporters after the game. “I made a lot of friends (in Boston), played with a lot of great teammates and (had) a great coaching staff. I’m just happy to get the win.”

The Bruins didn’t sound too enthused about losing to their former goaltending prospect.
“We know Malcolm well,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters after the defeat. “He’s a good first-shot goaltender for the most part. We wanted to put some stress on him and make him uncomfortable on those second ones, and I don’t think we did a good job on that.”
Prior to Sunday, Malcolm started only two NHL games. He lost them both and surrendered 3 goals in each contest. His current NHL stat line: 1 win, 2 loses, a 3.45 goals-against average and a .841 save-percentage.
He appeared in 127 games over four seasons with the Providence Bruins and compiled a 56-45-14 record with 6 shutouts, a 2.40 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage.
With Malcolm’s Vegas debut Sunday, there are two Subbans in the NHL. Malcolm is the younger brother of Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban. The youngest brother, defenseman Jordan Subban, was a Vancouver Canucks fourth-round draft pick in 2013. He currently plays for the Utica Comets, Vancouver’s AHL farm team.
